Final Project Report: Developing Age-Friendly Communities in a Post-Pandemic World

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted many challenges faced by older adults, from health concerns to increased isolation. In response, this project aimed to develop age-friendly communities that better support older people in a rapidly changing world.

This report details the steps taken to create environments that encourage active ageing, independence, and social inclusion. We worked closely with local authorities, community organisations, and healthcare providers to ensure the needs of older adults were met. Our focus was on:

Improving digital literacy: Many older people struggle with technology, which became vital during the pandemic for communication and access to services. We ran workshops to help older adults become more comfortable with digital tools.

Enhancing accessibility: We assessed public spaces to ensure they were accessible and welcoming for older people, making necessary improvements to infrastructure.

Reducing social isolation: By encouraging intergenerational activities and creating support networks, we aimed to foster connections that help reduce loneliness among older adults.

The report provides insights into what worked well and the areas that require further development. It also offers recommendations for future initiatives aimed at building resilient, age-friendly communities that support the well-being of older people in a post-pandemic world.

Executive Summary: Developing Age-Friendly Communities in a Post-Pandemic World

After the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to create communities that are friendly and supportive for older people. Many older adults now face challenges with their health, feeling isolated, and accessing important services. Building environments that help them stay active, independent, and socially connected is key to improving their quality of life.

This summary highlights how we can develop age-friendly communities in a world that is still recovering from the pandemic. It stresses the need for local councils, community groups, and healthcare services to work together to meet the changing needs of older adults. Focus areas include helping people get better with technology, making public spaces more accessible, and building relationships between different generations to prevent loneliness.

By taking a well-rounded approach, communities can create systems that support older people and help them live well in a fast-changing world.

Six Steps to Preventing Falls

Salford has one of the highest rates of falls causing injury and requiring hospital admission amongst older people in Greater Manchester. Falls are serious at any age, but breaking a bone after a fall becomes more likely as we get older. Even if a bone is not broken after a fall, people become fearful of falling again and this may limit the amount of activity a person feels they can do. However, falls are preventable and this booklet has been put together to help you as an older person or someone who looks after an older person to reduce the risk of falling. This booklet sets out six steps to reducing the risk of falling and provides some top tips and links to support.
