Each year, on 1st October, we come together to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, a day dedicated to honouring the invaluable contributions older people make to our communities. This year’s theme, “The Part We Play,” shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked but essential roles older people have in shaping and supporting the places where we live.

We are witnessing record numbers of over-50s in the workforce, contributing significantly to the growth of our economy. Beyond that, older people are also the most likely to volunteer, vote, and provide unpaid care to others. Yet, the immense part they play in the wellbeing of their communities often goes unnoticed, undervalued, and underappreciated.

To celebrate this year’s theme, we partnered with seven community venues across Salford, each hosting their own unique event to highlight the incredible impact older people have on building stronger, more connected neighbourhoods. Through these events, we explored the lasting difference older people make to community life.

We are thrilled to share that 145 older people took part in these community celebrations, engaging in conversations, sharing stories, and celebrating the part they play in making Salford a vibrant, welcoming place for all. Their energy, wisdom, and continued involvement in local life were truly inspiring.

Watch our video to see highlights from the day and hear the stories shared by our wonderful participants.

A huge thank you goes out to the following community venues that made this day so special:

Critchley Community Café
Salford Arts Theatre
Broughton Community Centre
Church of Ascension
CommUNity Little Hulton
Cornerstone
Lady James Hall
Their dedication to supporting older people and creating inclusive spaces for everyone is a testament to the power of local communities.

As we continue to reflect on the roles older people play, let’s remember to acknowledge their ongoing contributions, not just today but every day. Together, we can continue building communities where every generation is valued and celebrated.
