Denise’s Story

Denise 59 from Broughton, is one of the 11 million workers aged over 50 in the UK workforce.  A dedicated customer adviser at B&Q, has spent the last 15 and a half years serving customers and stocking shelves, but her role goes far beyond the tasks at hand. As a long-standing employee, Denise has found joy and purpose in her work, using it as a way to remain active, connect with others, and make a meaningful impact in the community.

Nearly 16 years into her career at B&Q, Denise represents what it means to contribute as an older worker. While many might see retirement as an option, Denise continues working, not just for the routine but for the people she meets along the way. “I go to work to meet new people and help them,” she says. This drive to support and connect with others keeps her engaged and fulfilled in her role. She thrives on the opportunity to assist customers, offering a helping hand, a friendly smile, or advice on DIY projects.

One of the things Denise appreciates most about her employer is their inclusive and age-friendly policies. With no upper age limit for employees, she feels the company provides an environment where workers of all ages are valued. This inclusivity creates a welcoming and diverse workplace, allowing Denise and others to bring their experience, wisdom, and dedication to the team. Denise has also been involved in B&Q’s community projects, further extending her sense of purpose and impact beyond the store.

Her commitment to her work and her colleagues goes beyond job responsibilities. Denise has formed lasting friendships with those she works alongside, creating a supportive network. These relationships enrich her experience and make her time at work more meaningful.

When asked about advice for others, especially older individuals, Denise’s message is simple yet powerful: “Get out into the community.” She believes that by engaging with others, you not only help those around you but also maintain your own activity levels and find opportunities to socialise. “It keeps you active and you get to meet new people,” she adds.

Denise’s story is one of connection, contribution, and community. She is a reminder that age is no barrier to making a difference, and that the part we play—no matter how big or small—can have a lasting impact on the lives of others.
